Litterlouts pay price for littering district
Throw it in the bin is the message to irresponsible litterlouts
after the Council fined 19 offenders for throwing cigarettes or
rubbish out of car windows.
Last year, from January to December 2007, a total of 93 Fixed
Penalty Notices were handed out to litterlouts for spoiling West
Lancashire's green and clean district.
A growing number of incidents related to people being caught
discarding their waste from moving vehicles - which is both
thoughtless and potentially dangerous.
As a result of the District Council's zero tolerance approach to
the dumping of rubbish, a total of 93 were hit in the pocket for
waste related offences.
They had been caught on the Council's CCTV system, by the Council's
Street Scene Officers, Environmental Health Team and the Police
Community Support Officers, who have all been working together to
clampdown on this issue.
Amongst the string of offences commitment, one man was caught twice
throwing cigarette stubs from his mum's car window on the way to
Ormskirk School - so for these two journeys it cost him £150! Other
cases included people discarding bin bags of rubbish or breaking
the rules for disposing of their household waste.
As a result almost £6,000 has been handed out in fines, Fixed
Penalty Notices and court cost.
Cllr Martin Forshaw, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Health,
said: "These figures show our commitment to improving the
environment for our residents. Our Street Scene Officers undertake
an important role and the public should be aware that depositing
rubbish out of a car window or on the streets can lead to us taking
action against them. I would urge people to think twice before
dumping their waste and take pride in their neighbourhood."
