Schoolgirl flies the flag for West
Lancashire
A creative schoolgirl has won the gold with her drawing skills
and designed the banner that will lead out the West Lancs.
team at this year’s Lancashire Youth Games.
Katie, who is a year 6 pupil at St. James Primary School,
Skelmersdale beat off tough competition from hopeful pupils from
the entire district to win the coveted opportunity of leading the
West Lancs. team out on to the field and having their artwork on
display at this prestigious sporting event.
The SPAR Youth Games was held at Blackpool Sports Centre on
Saturday 28 June 2008 and saw around 1500 young people from 14
local authorities across Lancashire represent their districts in a
variety of sports.
Katie wasn’t the district’s only winner at the games, the West
Lancs. Mixed Cricket team represented by Lordsgate (Burscough)
Primary School also brought home the gold and Aughton Town Green
Primary School were the runners up in the Tag Rugby Tournament.
Cllr Geoff Hammond, Portfolio Holder for Community Services,
said: "Katie’s work is excellent and she really deserves to be the
winner of the competition. I’m sure it will be an experience she
will never forget, seeing her work reproduced on such a large scale
and leading our teams out at such a celebrated event. I would also
like to thank all the schools for taking part in this year’s event
and congratulate them on doing so well."
