Volunteering at community centres proves rewarding!

Volunteering at community centres proves rewarding!

If you want to help your local neighbourhood, learn new skills or have ideas to share, then volunteering at the Council’s community centres could be for you!

West Lancashire District Council works with local management committees to run four centres in Skelmersdale and is always looking for people to help out with various activities.

It could be anything from supervising, on the operational side or delivering events to sharing ideas and developing new initiatives.

Volunteering is also very rewarding and is great for learning extra skills, socialising, making new friends and giving something back to the community.

Cllr Geoff Hammond, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: "We have lots of volunteers who do a fantastic job and are highly respected within the local community because of the tireless work they carry out. I’d like to thank them for their efforts and would urge others to follow suit as we are always on the lookout for new volunteers. I would encourage anyone who is interested and has a few hours to spare to get in touch as it is a very rewarding role."

One person who knows how rewarding volunteering can be is Anne Hudson who helps out at Digmoor Community Centre. She was recently given an award by Lancashire Constabulary in recognition of her selfless, outstanding community work.

Anne said: "I’m always at the community centre offering support and advice because I just love people, so it’s no hardship for me. I never expected to get anything for doing something that I love but it was one of the nicest things to have happened to me and I’m delighted."

Anyone who would like to find out more about volunteering at any of the centres in Digmoor, Birch Green, Tanhouse or West Skelmersdale can contact the centres individually or contact Paula Campbell on 01695 585144. Alternatively, please visit our community centre pages.
