Gearing up to go smokefree

A new law which will ensure smokefree public places and
workplaces comes into effect in three months' time and West
Lancashire District Council is gearing up to raise awareness among
businesses and residents.
The law, which comes into force on 1 July 2007, will ban smoking in
virtually all enclosed public places and workplaces in England.
This will include pubs, restaurants and offices, so people can
socialise, relax, travel, shop and work without being exposed to
second-hand smoke.
Employers and business owners are being urged to prepare to comply
with the new law and the Department of Health will be sending
information and 'no smoking' signs to around 1.7 million businesses
during April.
West Lancashire District Council will be responsible for enforcing
the new law and will provide support and information to businesses
who will be affected.
Mr David Tilleray, Executive Manager of Community Services, said:
"This is important legislation which aims to provide a healthier
environment, so that people are not exposed to the harm that
second-hand smoke can cause. We are preparing for implementation of
the new law by increasing awareness in businesses about what they
need to do to comply with the new requirements, and are supporting
the awareness-raising work being carried out nationally and
regionally by the Department of Health."
Businesses are encouraged to register on the Department of Health
website Smokefree England to
receive information packs and signs. The Council will be issuing
further information, and setting up a smokefree information area on
the website, over the coming weeks.
