Litterlouts caught on camera
A small mobile
CCTV camera has helped to catch two young litterlouts in
Burscough.
The Council's Environmental Protection Team has its own portable
surveillance equipment, which it uses in hidden hotspot locations
across West Lancashire to detect fly tipping, littering, dog
fouling and other anti-social behaviour.
If the team receives complaints about littering in certain areas
they will monitor the site by putting the cameras in locations
where there has been problems in a bid to catch offenders.
The initiative is working well and in one recent successful case
two young offenders were filmed dropping cigarette stubs near shops
in Liverpool Road, Burscough.
As a result the Police Community Support Officers obtained their
details from a local school and each has been issued with a £75
fixed penalty notice in the presence of their parents.
David Tilleray, Executive Manager for Community Services, said:
"The portable CCTV camera is an important tool in helping us to
clamp down on this sort of behaviour because it can be hidden in a
variety of locations to record any misbehaviour. This case
highlights that if you are filmed littering the streets of West
Lancashire you can be penalised."
If anybody witnesses any fly-tipping incidents and would like to
make a complaint, please contact 01695 577177 or visit the
Recycling section.
