Junior Golf Swinging Success
It was a swinging success for young golfers who took part in the
first ever Junior Open for West Lancashire.
More than 30 players descended on Beacon Park Golf Course, Up
Holland for last week's event, which was run by Beacon Park Golf
Club and supported by West Lancashire District Council.
On the day the participants battled it out on the course despite
the wet weather and after some tough competition it was Matthew
Winstanley, a junior member at Beacon Golf Course, playing off a
handicap of 4, who won the title with a Gross Score of 79.
After his win, Matthew said: "It was a weird feeling really because
to be honest I thought I'd played really badly and I thought my
score of 79 was pretty poor but when I found out that I had won I
was really made up."
The Chairman of the Council attended the evening reception to
present the 'W.L.D.C Junior Open ' trophy to the winner and
additional prizes and awards to all competitors.
Because the Open was such a big hit with young people first time
round it now looks set to be an annual event and organisers have
promised it will be even bigger and better next year.
Councillor Rob Bailey, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: "It's
the first time we have held this sort of competition for junior
golfers and to get 30 young people taking part was a real
achievement. The young people were really pleased with how the
event went and want to make it an annual competition so next year
we are confident that it will appeal to even more as it grows in
popularity."
Mark Prosser of DCT, added: "DCT Leisure work very closely both
with WLDC and with the Members Club here at Beacon Park to
facilitate this type of event. We are very proud that Matthew won
the overall title for 2007 and pleased that every single
participator went away well fed and with a prize.
This type of event owes much of its success to the volunteer
helpers from Beacon park Golf club without whom such an event could
not even be contemplated. We would like to publicly thank everyone
concerned, particularly The Junior Organiser Alan Rigby."
The 18-holf golf course is open from 7.00am to dusk, seven days a
