Renowned artist's collection comes to
Ormskirk
Fans of the Wigan-based artist Lawrence
Isherwood have been eagerly awaiting this significant exhibition,
which will be launched on 8th September.
Followers regard him as one of the best impressionist/expressionist
painters this country has produced. Seen as a 'one-off' he was an
eccentric and controversial figure with collectors as notable as
L.S. Lowry and Prince Charles. His work was also recently seen on
the Antiques Roadshow and has previously been featured on Granada
Reports.
He was an extremely prolific painter, often completing an
impressive painting in minutes. A master of many styles he was very
passionate about his work and is particularly known for his bold
use of thickly applied paint and the sense of energy that infuses
his work. In fact, he gave some of his paintings away or would sell
them for next to nothing because he wanted people to love his
work!
His paintings have become hugely collectable since his death in
1989, with prices continuing to rise and competition to purchase
the best example of his work can be fierce at times.
So, it's a real coup for Chapel Gallery to be hosting one of his
largest collections of paintings and to be able to offer spectators
a unique opportunity to appreciate his most admired pieces. All the
works included in the exhibition are for sale and anyone interested
in attending the Private View is asked to contact the Gallery
early, as invitations are limited.
Cllr Rob Bailey, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: "We are proud
to be hosting this exhibition because his work always generates
excitement amongst collectors and it is sure to attract visitors
from far and wide. It is an excellent chance for people to invest
in Isherwood's work and also offers a unique insight into the life
of the artist. It also reflects how far Chapel Gallery has
developed over the years and that artists and organisations regard
it as an excellent place to exhibit - it really puts West Lancs on
the map!"
Showcasing alongside Lawrence Isherwood's works from 8th to 29th
September are David Stanley's abstract paintings, which reveal an
extraordinary understanding of colour and light. David Stanley is a
contemporary artist, based in the Northwest, who has also built up
a strong following of collectors. He is recognised for his expert
handling of paint and for producing artworks that demonstrate
intense energy and depth.
