Swimmers make a splash for charity
Swimmers
at Park Pool and Nye Bevan had a stroke of success when they raised
an impressive £2,734 for charity.
Water enthusiasts who signed up for this year's national Swimathon
2007 earlier this year at leisure centres in Ormskirk and
Skelmersdale made the splash for Marie Curie Cancer Care and the
Swimathon Foundation.
This money contributed to the £1.4 million raised across the UK and
will help provide high quality nursing, totally free to terminally
ill people.
Bill Lloyd, Chairman of West Lancashire Community Leisure Trust,
said: "We are delighted that so many local people got in and swam
for Marie Curie Cancer Care and we are thrilled with how much money
was raised. I'd just like to say a big thank you to everyone who
took part and to staff for their enthusiasm in organising such an
event."
Cllr Rob Bailey, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, added: "The money
goes to a really good cause and I'm delighted that we have such
generous people in West Lancashire who want to do something
positive for charity and get fit at the same time."
Seventy per cent of all money raised by Swimathon 2007 will go
directly to Marie Curie Cancer Care. The additional thirty per cent
of funds raised goes to The Swimathon Foundation, which provides
funding for smaller, local charities and other not-for-profit
organisations, which benefit the health and wellbeing of people
throughout the UK.
Craig Evans (Park Pool) and Alan Davies (Nye Bevan), Serco's
Commercial Site Managers, said: "Swimathon was a really fun event
to organise and it brought out a fantastic community spirit at the
pools. Many of the spectators who came to support friends and
family on the day said they would like to join in next year, so
we're looking forward to an even bigger turnout for Swimathon
2008!"
