District Council helps school secure funding for arts project
Pupils will show their creative side during a special Arts Festival, thanks to a windfall grant of £8,700.

West Lancashire District Council's Arts Services Team helped Ormskirk Asmall Primary School put together the successful funding application to the Awards for All Lottery to help kick-start this innovative project.

Called 'People and Places', the money will allow the schoolchildren, together with local community groups, work alongside professional artists on designs for the school and to focus on visual art and dance.

The four-week initiative will start in May and will involve the youngsters and local groups putting their own creative ideas forward and learning more about the world of art.

It will then culminate in a weeklong art celebration at the school, which will involve live performances and the opportunity for parents to see what the children have been doing. It will then end with the official unveiling of the permanent piece of artwork to celebrate the theme of 'People and Places', which will take centre stage on the school premises.

Cllr David Westley, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: "We are delighted to have been able to help and support the school to secure this funding to carry out such an exciting project. This is a fantastic opportunity for the pupils and the local groups in the community to work with professional artists to create a stunning masterpiece and to get really involved in performance and dance too."

The District Council and the school have chosen the two artists who will be working on the project. Jan Mussman will be the dance facilitator and Sharon Shaw will concentrate on visual arts.

They will be liaising with the school to plan for the forthcoming festival.

Brenda Golds, Headteacher, Asmall Primary School, said: "We were very happy to hear about the success of our bid. It will provide an opportunity for all the children to work extensively with the two artists. We are looking forward to working in partnership with Jan and Sharon and to producing some really exciting art work."
