Be water wise this summer
This summer the District Council is urging everyone - whatever age
- to think before you swim!
Drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death among
the under 16s but water safety is essential for all ages. Taking a
dip in a canal, lake or river can seem like a great way to cool off
from the summer sun but even though water may look safe it can be
extremely dangerous.
You may swim well in a warm indoor pool but that doesn't mean that
you will be able to swim in cold water, which can drastically
affect strength and stamina. Cold temperatures can even cause
muscle cramps that may prevent you from swimming.
There are untold hidden dangers in water such as currents, sharp
rocks and debris. It is also difficult to know what depth water is
and once you're in, if banks are slippery or steep sided, it can be
very difficult to get back out.
The most positive way to avoid drowning is to prevent getting into
the water in the first place. Be alert and look out for dangers,
and always observe safety advice from flags and notices.
Cllr Rob Bailey, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: "The West
Lancashire countryside boasts lots of lakes, meandering streams and
canals but I would urge everyone to enjoy them from the banking.
Once temperatures start to rise, open water becomes very tempting
for a quick dip. The danger is that although water can appear very
innocent, cold temperatures under the surface can affect even the
strongest swimmers. I would urge everyone to exercise caution this
summer and think twice before they dive in."
