Step out for summer

Don't be beaten by the rain and step out into the fresh air this
summer on one of over 35 walks organised by the Countryside Rangers
as part of 2007's exciting West Lancs Walking Festival.
This year's programme of events runs from 1 - 31 August and is
bursting with a huge variety of walks for all ages and abilities to
enjoy.
There really is something for everyone. There are long walks, short
walks, informative walks, walks just for ladies, fun walks for
kids, walks for the whole family - even walks for your pet
dog!
You can join the popular Ormskirk Town Trail and discover
fascinating facts about Ormskirk's history and heritage. Take part
in one of numerous 'stroll with an expert' events, learning from
archaeologists, flora and fauna experts and other knowledgeable
locals.
There is a chance to learn how to read maps, take bearings and
navigate safely in the countryside. And this year there is even the
opportunity to get involved in a 'bat walk' to track down the
Beacon's bat life with special sound detectors.
However, if you just want to take time out for a relaxing stroll,
then you can enjoy one of the many walks designed simply to make
the most of the beautiful West Lancashire countryside.
Cllr Rob Bailey, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: "This year the
walking festival has a huge variety of walks on offer with events
taking place all over the district. With all the bad weather people
haven't been outside in the fresh air as much as they usually would
during the summer months but a good walk is enjoyable whatever the
weather. So I would encourage everyone to dig out your waterproofs
and get involved - and who knows, with a bit of luck the sun might
even shine!"
All walks are free and take place at a variety of locations across
the district. Sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing to suit all
weather conditions must be worn.
