Aughton Street Artwork
West Lancashire District Council is committed to listening to
public opinion.
Responding to previous concerns about the design for a gateway
feature to form a striking entrance into Aughton Street and
Ormskirk town centre, the Council set up a special design group,
which included a number of independent local representatives. The
aim of this group was to allow local people to determine the final
outcome of the design process through a public vote and residents
were given the opportunity to vote for their favourite
design.
The Council received 300 votes. This low level of public response
and the concerns raised about the principle of any form of artwork
in this location, highlighted that there was insufficient public
support to proceed. On 29 May 2007 Cabinet agreed that the project
should not continue.
Cllr Ian Grant, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and Planning,
said: "Whilst we recognise that art projects often spark lively
debate and opposing opinions, the limited public support for the
project meant that we felt it was important to listen to the
concerns expressed by residents."
"At the same time, I would like to thank Camm Design for all their
work, along with the design team and also those members of the
public who took the time to partake in the consultation exercise
and aided the Council in making the appropriate decision."
