Keeping kids safe

To support National Child Safety Week 2007, West Lancashire
District Council will be stressing to all local employers the
importance of safety for young people in the work place.
Children and young people of compulsory school age need a special
certificate to work. During the national campaign, which runs from
18-24 June, Council Officers will be reminding local businesses
about the importance of making sure this certification is in
place.
Businesses will also be supplied with copies of an informative
leaflet printed by Lancashire County Council Education Welfare
Service, which provides information on employer responsibilities
and how to register a young person for work. It also contains
details on ages for youth employment, what hours a young person can
work and jobs they are prohibited from doing.
Cllr John Baldock, Portfolio Holder for Environment and Health,
said: "Accidents are one of the biggest killers of children in the
UK. Last year around 250 children and young people lost their lives
as a result of an accident."
"Making sure that working environments are as safe as possible for
young people is vital as they are particularly vulnerable to
accidents due to their relative inexperience. I am therefore very
pleased that our Commercial Safety Team will be distributing these
leaflets and providing information and advice to local employers,
helping to ensure that our children are protected as much as
possible."
A copy of the leaflet can be downloaded from the Child Employment
section at Lancashire County Council.
