Putting the 'great' in outdoors

Summer is almost here and residents in West Lancashire are lucky
enough to live in an area of spectacular natural beauty, so why not
get out there and start making the most of it?
The District Council's Countryside Rangers manage 10 countryside
sites across the region and they are yours to enjoy - for
free!
From heritage trails to woodland walks and picnics, there really is
something for everyone. What better way to spend a summer's day
than following a nature trail at the newly opened Hunters Hill or
strolling along the picturesque Tawd Valley, which runs through the
heart of Skelmersdale.
Partake in an idyllic lakeside walk at Abbey Lakes in Up Holland
with its attractive three acre fishing lake, or at Platts Lane Lake
in Burscough.
Enjoy the magical waterfalls that can be found at Fairy Glen in
Wrightington, or the impressive woodland at Ruff Wood, Ormskirk and
Dean Wood, which runs from Up Holland to Gathurst.
Cyclists, walkers and horse riders can escape the traffic along the
10-mile route of the old Cheshire Lines railway line. Or you can
simply sit back and admire views of the Lancashire countryside from
the fabulous vantage point of Beacon Country Park.

Cllr Rob Bailey, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: "They say
the best things in life are free and that is certainly the case
here in West Lancashire. Our Rangers organises a wide variety of
free events throughout the year, such as informative strolls,
guided walks and nature trails but the summer months really are the
optimum time to see the countryside at its colourful best. So what
are you waiting for - get out into the great outdoors today."
