Get in and swim for charity
Swimmers across West Lancashire will be making a splash for charity
cash in March - but there's still time to put your name down to
join in.
Water enthusiasts can sign up for this year's Swimathon 2007 event
and raise money for charity at the same time.
From 22nd to 25th March Park Pool in Ormskirk and Nye Bevan in
Skelmersdale will be joining more than 600 pools across the country
to support the event.
Now in its 21st year, the idea behind it is to bring swimmers
together to raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care, a charity that
provides expert nursing to terminally ill cancer patients.
Geoff Hammond, Chairman of West Lancashire Community Leisure Trust,
said: "In this day and age in light of rising obesity levels and
the need to stay healthy this event provides a great opportunity to
do something really positive for your own personal fitness and to
help charity too."
Swimathon is open to everyone, inviting people to set their own
personal challenge by accomplishing a distance of their choice
under the 'Distance Challenge'. For those interested in joining
forces with friends, family or colleagues there is a 5k challenge
that can be completed by a team of up to five. Or if you prefer to
do it at your own pace you can do the 'Simply Swim' option.
Cllr David Westley, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said:
"I would encourage people of all ages and abilities to register to
support this event because it is lots of fun, will increase your
fitness and it is such a worthwhile cause. The money raised will
enable Marie Curie nurses to make a real difference to terminally
ill people."
Tony Wood, Contract Manger for Serco Leisure said: "Park Pool will
host their sessions on 22nd March at 7pm, 23rd March at 9am and
24th March at 4pm. Nye Bevan will hold its sessions on 22nd March
at 4pm, 23rd March at 12noon and 25th March at 9am. It would be
great to see everyone supporting this great cause, so come on down
to take part or place a pledge."
To take part, register now at www.swimathon.org or call the
Swimathon hotline on 0845 36 700 36. The cost is £8.50 and
concessions £4.50.
