New countryside site

21st March 2007, 07/98

New countryside site to be unveiled

Hunter's Hill

Countryside lovers will soon be able to make the most of new woodland that the District Council has obtained.

Hunter's Hill, in Hilldale, near Parbold, is an old quarry that has been reclaimed by the Council to turn into a public open space, which is to be officially launched on 22nd March.

Work has been going on at the site for the last few months to make the most of its beautiful woodlands, shrubs and rock faces by creating footpaths, wheelchair access, seating and picnic areas as well as various view points.

Now visitors will be able to wander through the luscious woodlands and discover the hidden wildlife as well as take in the extraordinary views of the coastline.

Cllr David Westley, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: "West Lancashire is renowned for its breathtaking greenery and we are proud to be able to add this new piece of land to our extending list of countryside sites. People of all ages will soon be able to enjoy using this land for everything from walks to family picnics, which is fantastic news for spring."

There will be a special guided tour of the site on 11th April, starting 1pm, led by the rangers who will talk about how the site was acquired and to point out its beauty spots.

The rangers are also currently developing information boards and educational packs for schools focusing on the wildlife, geology and history of the site. It is also intended that a 'Friends of Hunter's Hill' group will be set up to help with conservation and maintenance works so the rangers will be asking for volunteers during their guided walk.

The work at Hunters Hill has been funded by the Council and Natural England, through Defra's Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund.

The addition of Hunters Hill brings the total number of Council sites to nine: Cheshire Lines, Tawd Valley Park, Platts Lane Lakes, Beacon Country Park, Ruff Wood, Fairy Glen, Dean Wood and Abbey Lakes. For more information visit our Countryside section.
