Designing the district
As part of its commitment to high quality development across West
Lancashire, the District Council has produced a draft design guide
- and wants to hear what you think about it.
The idea behind the guide is to help raise awareness of the
benefits of good design and provide advice and guidance on how this
can best be achieved.
In an official poll carried out nationally in 2002 by MORI, an
overwhelming 85% of people agreed that 'better quality buildings
and public spaces improve the quality of people's lives'. The
Council recognises that the design and development of the district
is an area that many local people take interest in and so is now
asking for public opinions on the draft design guide.
The design guide can viewed by visiting the Planning section, here you will also be
able to submit your thoughts on the document.
Cllr Ian Grant, Portfolio Holder for Planning, said: "West
Lancashire is a very attractive place to live, work and visit, and
all development proposals - from a basic house extension right
through to the erection of a large commercial unit - require a
proper understanding of the site, its surroundings and the
distinctive nature of the location.
"It is hoped that by publishing a design guide it will help to
promote the highest standard of building design for all types of
development across the district, providing a benchmark to guide
developers and assisting in the decision making process for
planning applications. To ensure the guide reflects the views of
the whole community I would urge people to take the opportunity to
comment before the deadline of Wednesday 12 December."
Hard copies of the draft design guide are available on request by
calling 01695 585239. Copies are also available at the Council
Offices, 52 Derby Street, Ormskirk, and at local libraries.
