What's the story? Youngsters' artwork to be unveiled!

Take a peek at the work of the young artists of tomorrow at the Youth Open at Chapel Gallery.Matthew Roby - the Greatest Show on Earth

For the second year running the Gallery invited children of all abilities and talents to submit their work earlier this year for selection towards a final exhibition.

Similar to the Open for adults, it gives young people a unique chance to showcase their talents.

More than 180 entered their works for possible submission and now 49 are to go on show from 6th October to 17th November.

Telling Tales is the theme for this year and 8 to 18 year olds have put together an array of exciting works inspired by the use of narrative and storytelling in art, ranging from paintings, drawings, 3D, collage, photography and textiles.

Also on at the Chapel Gallery at the same time is the exhibition 'The Importance of Narrative'.

Seven artists - Jennie Cunningham, Nicola Dale, Lauren van Helmond, Rosemary Morison, Rebbeca Pelly-Fry, Andy Shaw and Fiona Zobole - use a variety of media to demonstrate the use of narrative.

From the visual interpretation of classic fables, the use of symbolism to convey meaning, through to the literal illustration associated with storytelling - these artworks make for a thoughtful, amusing and challenging exhibition.

Cllr Rob Bailey, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, said: "These two exhibitions are centred around the same theme of narrative but are quite different in their approaches and offer their own unique interpretations on canvas. It's great to see that we have so much young talent judging by the pieces that have been selected and complements the professional work that can be seen in the 'The Importance of Narrative' exhibition - so make sure you pay a visit to the Gallery."

One of the artists exhibiting - Andy Shaw - will be at Chapel Gallery on Thursday 1st November for the 'Artist's Talk' about the exhibition. Anyone who would like to book should contact Chapel Gallery on 01695 571328, email chapelgallery@westlancsdc.gov.uk or pop into the Gallery, which is situated on St Helens Road, Ormskirk.

Chapel Gallery, St Helens Road, is open from 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday, as is the Contemporary Craft Shop. The Chapel Gallery Café is open 10.30am to 4pm Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and 10am to 4pm Thursday and Saturday. Entrance is free.
