Youngsters join Council to celebrate Local Democracy
Week
Pupils will get a taste of the decision making
process when they join the District Council to celebrate Local
Democracy Week (15-21 October).
On Monday 15 October local school children will enjoy realistic
debates staged in the impressive Council Chamber, giving them a
real flavour and understanding of how local democracy works.
During the morning session pupils from St. Edmunds RC Primary,
Skelmersdale will be debating environmental issues. Burscough
Priory Science College students will then discuss issues that
affect the local community during the afternoon debate.
Each school will have to nominate a 'Chief Executive' for the day
who will sit next to the Council's Chairman, Cllr William Cropper,
to help run the mock meeting. All the other pupils will be referred
to as 'councillors' during the sessions.
Chairman of the Council, Cllr William Cropper, said: "Holding a
mock debate is a lively and interesting way for school children to
learn about local government and develop an understanding of how
things work at a local level.
"By making the event as realistic as possible I hope it really
sparks an interest for the pupils and that it encourages them from
an early age to take an interest in their local council and the
decision making process."
