Building a better future for council tenants
The Council's housing department has signed an innovative four
year deal with eight building contractors, as part of its
commitment to providing better homes for tenants.
In line with the Council's capital investment programme, set up to
help meet the demands of the Government's 2010 Decent Homes
Standard, the Council has now taken the pioneering steps of signing
eight contractors - not for the usual one year deal, but for four
years.
This exciting move means that council tenants will continue to
benefit from consistently high standards of upgrading work across a
wide range of home improvements, from replacement boilers and
re-roofing, to new kitchens and rewiring upgrades.
To get the ball rolling, the Council held a workshop for all the
newly signed contractors on Thursday 20 September, providing the
opportunity to discuss ideas and plans for an exciting future for
council homes.
Cllr Val Hopley, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: "I am
delighted that these steps have been taken to ensure the continued
development and improvement of council homes. The Council is
committed to providing a high standard of accommodation for tenants
and to meeting the Government's Decent Homes Standards. Signing the
contractors for four years will not only provide consistent
standards of work but it will also help to keep the projects
progressing at a steady pace.
"The Council also sought companies that would try, wherever
possible, to employ local labour, which will help to provide local
jobs for local people - so it really is great news all
round!"
