18th August 2008, 08/190

Clampdown on summer anti social behaviour and underage drinking

During the summer holidays the District Council is carrying out a range of interventions to clampdown on alcohol problems!

As part of the Summer Nights campaign to tackle drink-related anti-social behaviour, the Council is involved in a number of activities to encourage sensible drinking.

The Countryside Rangers will be patrolling hotspot areas at the Council’s various woodlands and wetlands sites in a bid to stamp out anti social behaviour. Officers will be regularly walking around the countryside in the evenings when nuisance behaviour is likely to occur to nip any problems in the bud.

Licensing officers will also be joining the police to visits pubs and off-licenses to stamp out underage drinking and to make sure they are adhering to licensing regulations.

Council tenants who are causing a nuisance will also be visited by Housing Officers to make them aware of their tenancy agreements and the consequences if they break the rules.

The Council’s Sports Development Team have also organised a number of diversionary activities including a mini football league throughout the school holidays to reduce and prevent anti social behaviour.

Cllr Paul Greenall, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, said: "We are spearheading a number of initiatives around underage and binge drinking because a lot of this unruly behaviour occurs during the summer months. Hopefully by working closely with other agencies we will help reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour and increase community reassurance.

This is the fourth year that the District Council is backing the Summer Nights campaign and supporting the work of Lancashire Constabulary and other Community Safety Partners to curb nuisance drinking and anti social behaviour across West Lancashire. In the four years it has been running, it has been successful in addressing these issues and reminding people of their obligations to others."
