Warning to vehicles breaking traffic rules in Ormskirk town centre

To protect the safety of pedestrians in Ormskirk town centre, enforcement action will be taken against vehicles caught breaking traffic regulation orders.

During recent months there has been an increase in the number of unauthorised vehicles using the town centre roads that are off limits, which can be dangerous and reduce the level of safety for pedestrians and customers in the area.

In addition, it is spoiling the atmosphere and appearance of the busy shopping environment and is also causing damage to the highway infrastructure.

West Lancashire District Council has a duty to preserve the town centre because it is an important, historic market town and the main square is designated as a conservation area.

As a result, letters have been sent out to town centre businesses advising them of our concerns and warning them that enforcement action will be taken against anyone found breaching any existing traffic regulation orders.

From Monday 18 August 2008, the police will step up enforcement action and will not hesitate to give out fixed penalty tickets.

Cllr Martin Forshaw, Portfolio Holder for Planning and Transportation, said: "The town centre area of Church Street, Aughton Street, Burscough Street and Moor Street should only be used by vehicles accessing premises for delivery and maintenance purposes which cannot be accessed by any other route. Yet we have had numerous complaints that many vehicles are entering and parking within these town centre roads that shouldn’t be and are causing a hazard. So to protect the safety of residents and to maintain the vitality of the town centre we have decided to seek enforcement action if vehicles don’t abide by the rules."
