Youth room to be officially opened

Young people in Skelmersdale can celebrate because they now have their own safe meeting place to mix and socialise at.

As part of the £3.7m funding to make Digmoor, Moorside and parts of Tanhouse cleaner, greener and safer, a special youth room has been built within Digmoor Community Centre.

The Chairman of West Lancashire District Council, Cllr Cyril Ainscough, and Rosie Cooper MP, Chair of the Local Strategic Partnership, will officially open it on 23 August.

The day’s celebration, which will also coincide with a fun day at the centre, will mark the start of an initiative to benefit young people. It will give teenagers somewhere to go and spend time with like-minded people in a safe, informal environment. It will be their special room and aside from it being used as a meeting point, it will also play host to a computer club and planned activities that the youngsters want.

Margaret Highton, Chairman of the Neighbourhood Board, said:

"We know that a lot of young people feel that they have nowhere to go so this facility will have a fantastic impact on the neighbourhood and give the teenagers a place of their own."

MP Rosie Cooper, Chair of the Local Strategic Partnership, added: "I’m delighted that the Local Strategic Partnership has been able to support the development of the youth room, which will really benefit both teenagers and the wider community."

The youth room is just one of many exciting projects to come out of the £3.7 million spend for these areas.

Cllr Paul Greenall, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety, said:

"It’s exciting to see so many people benefiting from all the various initiatives that have been funded through the £3.7m windfall, such as environmental improvements, new safety measures and other much-needed schemes to benefit the area. There’s still more to come, so watch this space."
