Go green this Christmas
‘Tis the season to recycle so why not give the environment the
best present of all this Christmas and put your waste to good
use.
Every year people spend time wrapping up presents, giving out
cards and gifts or going out and buying a real tree - and these are
just the type of items that can be recycled.
So West Lancashire District Council is giving out lots of green
tips to make sure that we can help the environment.
Easy ways to enjoy a greener Christmas are:
- Buy your fruit and vegetables loose so there’s less
packaging
- When shopping take a reusable bag and say no to plastic
carriers
- Buy drinks in bigger bottles as they generate less waste
- Stick with tradition and put presents in a stocking that can be
reused
- For toys and electrical gadgets buy rechargeable batteries -
for every 500 charges you’ll save 499 batteries being thrown
away
- Cardboard from bulky present packaging can be put out for
recycling
- Got new glad rags for Christmas? Don’t forget you can put your
old clothes out for recycling in your clear textile bag
- Put vegetable peelings from Christmas dinner in your compost
bin
- Keep wrapping paper from Christmas morning to recycle in your
blue bag
- Christmas cards can also be recycled in your blue bag
- When it’s time to take your real tree down remember to
chop it up and place it in your green bin or green bag or take it
to a household waste recycling centre.
Cllr Paul Greenall, Portfolio Holder for Street Scene, said:
"Residents do a fantastic job with their recycling and our figures
are already excellent so I’m sure that Christmas will be an even
greener one this year. I’m sure that if people follow our top tips
to reduce waste they will be helping the environment for future
generations."
Don’t forget you can also take any extra waste or recycling to
your nearest household waste recycling centre who will be happy to
take it off your hands at either:
At a recycling event being held in Coronation Park, Ormskirk,
you can also make use of your Christmas tree by turning it into
bark mulch for your garden. The event is free and will take place
on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 January, 2pm to 3pm, meeting in the
wildlife area of the park. For more details contact the park ranger
on 01695 585147 or email chris.horsfall@westlancsdc.gov.uk.
