Free trees branch out across West Lancashire
West Lancashire District Council has had an excellent response
to the brand new Free Tree Scheme with over 170 residents taking up
the offer to plant free trees.
This initiative, which was launched in October, aims to boost
the district’s natural beauty, attract wildlife and improve the
environment. As part of the scheme more than 1,400 trees will be
planted in West Lancashire to mark National Tree Week (26 November
- 7 December).
Residents that applied for the trees will receive letters
confirming their allocation and how to collect the trees. They are
allowed up to 10 trees and will also receive information on how to
plant and nurture the trees.
As a result, a wide array of native British trees will be
planted across the district, such as oak, birch, blackthorn, holly,
crab apple, mountain ash, hawthorn, and scots pine.
Councillor Martin Forshaw, Portfolio Holder for Planning and
Transportation said:"This is the first year of the scheme and I’m
pleased that residents have taken up our offer to plant trees.
Planting so many trees will enhance the district’s appearance and
leave a lasting impression for future generations. The green
heritage in West Lancashire is one of our strongest assets and this
is a positive step towards improving our stunning landscapes."
Two local plant nurseries, Mahood Brothers Ltd, Lathom and J. A.
Jones Nurseries (Churchtown Ltd), will help to distribute the trees
to residents.
