Double desire at Chapel Gallery with youth and crafts!out of this world

It’s a double delight at Chapel Gallery as two popular annual exhibitions come to town - the Youth Open and Objects of Desire.

The two inspiring collections showcase the works of talented craftspeople and upcoming young artists from 8 November to 10 January 2009.

Out of this World is the theme for this year’s Youth Open for 8 to 18 year olds. For the third year running the Gallery invited young people of all abilities and talents to submit their work for selection towards this final showcase. Similar to the event for adults held in the summer, it gives young people a unique chance to showcase their talents.

As a result an exciting collection of works have been chosen for display by the judges, which has been inspired by the world of the future, ranging from paintings, drawings, 3D, collage, photography and textiles.

Also on at the Chapel Gallery at the same time is the exhibition ‘Objects of Desire’. After the success of last year’s same exhibition, the Gallery has brought together a fresh selection of artists and makers showcasing innovation in the field of contemporary craft.

Artworks include striking collections of ceramics, glass, jewellery, metalwork and textiles. The exhibition considers our continued fascination with contemporary craft and design objects as society becomes more design aware.

The 22 artists who are exhibiting include those who have developed impressive reputations, together with recent graduates exploring fresh ideas who are already generating excitement amongst collectors.

And one of the artists exhibiting - Patricia Greaves - will be at Chapel Gallery on Thursday 13th November for the ‘Artist’s Talk’ about the exhibition and her continuing textile art practice.

Cllr Geoff Hammond, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: "These two exhibitions are both rich in their unique styles and innovation. It’s great to see that we have so much young talent judging by the pieces that have been selected. And the engaging ‘Objects of Desire’ collection is an excellent opportunity to appreciate and even purchase artworks by impressive contemporary craft makers. So why not pay a visit to the gallery."

Anyone who would like to book the artist’s talk should contact the Gallery on 01695 571328, or email chapelgallery@westlancsdc.gov.uk. Alternatively, visit the Gallery’s website - www.chapelgallery.org.uk (external link) or our Gallery pages.

The public can visit the Gallery, off St Helens Road, anytime from 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday. The café is open from 10am to 4pm. Entrance is free.
