Protect your pet from fireworks frights!
‘Remember, remember to keep your dog safe on the 5 of November’
is the message to canine owners across West Lancashire.
In the run-up to Guy Fawkes night, many people start the sparks
off early by setting off fireworks, which can alarm animals. If
your dog is frightened by loud noises don’t ignore the problem.
West Lancashire District Council is supporting the RSPCA’s
campaign to keep pets safe at this stressful time of year by
following some simple steps.
-
Close all windows and curtains and put on some music, or the
television, to mask the fireworks’ sound.
-
If your dog shows any sign of fear, try to ignore their
behaviour unless there is imminent danger - for example if they are
likely to self harm.
-
Never show anger to your dog if they appear frightened - this
will only convince them that there is something to be afraid
of.
-
Do not fuss over or try to reassure your dog when they are
frightened.
-
Make sure they are kept in a secure and safe environment at all
times, so that they cannot bolt and escape in reaction to a sudden
noise. If you have had your dog micro-chipped/tattooed you will
certainly improve the chances of a safe return if they do escape.
All dogs should have a collar and tag providing details of
ownership
-
Set a good example and ignore the fireworks’ noise yourself.
-
Exercise your dog during daylight hours - never take them for a
walk when fireworks are being let off.
-
If you know of another dog that is not scared by noises and gets
on well with your dog, then keeping the two together during the
evenings may help your dog to realise that there’s no need to be
afraid.
Cllr Geoff Hammond, Portfolio Holder for Community Services,
said:"As the 5 November approaches, the air is filled with
fireworks, which can be frightening to pets. By following these
handy tips, it should ensure that pet owners and their dogs have a
stress-free bonfire night."
Firework users are also being urged to act responsibly by using
low noise fireworks; picking up firework debris after it has cooled
down and disposing of it safely; following the safety guidelines
for using fireworks at all times.
