Remembering our war heroes
Residents are invited to join various remembrance services to
commemorate our war heroes.
To mark Armistice Day, West Lancashire District Council has
organised a two-minute silence ceremony in Ormskirk town centre at
the stone dais in Moor Street on Tuesday 11 November at 11am.
The ceremony will honour those who have given their lives in two
World Wars and other conflicts, and all are welcome to attend.
Dignitaries will attend the service including Chairman of the
Council, Cllr Cyril Ainscough. The local clergy will lead the
service by saying prayers, the ‘Last Post’ will then be played and
maroons fired to start and end the silence.
Chairman Cllr Cyril Ainscough said: "I would ask the local
community to pause on Tuesday 11 November to remember all those
brave people who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
"I would also urge people to support the Royal British Legion’s
Poppy Appeal, which helps to raise money for dependents and
survivors."
On 9 November, Remembrance Sunday, the Chairman, accompanied by
Chief Executive Bill Taylor and Rosie Cooper MP will lay a wreath
at St Anne’s Church in Ormskirk, before attending a ceremony at the
parish church. After the service, there will be a salute and march
past the Civic Hall to the Comrades Club, where the Chairman will
lay a wreath.
Vice Chairman Cllr Geoff M. Roberts, accompanied by Deputy Chief
Executive Les Abernethy, will lay a wreath at Skelmersdale War
Memorial in Sandy Lane at 11am.
Other wreath laying ceremonies will take place in Aughton,
Burscough, Lathom and Up Holland, mainly organised by the parish
councils.
