Chapel Gallery could be in line for attractive tourism award!

Popular art attraction Chapel Gallery has been short-listed for a prestigious tourism award.

The gallery in Ormskirk is in the running for the title of ‘Small Visitor Attraction of the Year’ in the Lancashire and Blackpool Tourism Awards 2009/10.

It’s the first time the gallery has been in line for this award and is a reflection of all the exciting initiatives that have been developed over the years as people flock to experience the inspirational art and culture it offers.

Since it opened its doors in 2001 the gallery has attracted visitors from far and wide and boasts an extensive and diverse exhibition programme throughout the year, showing a wide range of disciplines from crafts, paintings and photography to sculpture and textiles.

Not afraid to experiment, the gallery has introduced many unusual exhibitions and workshops for both young and old to enjoy. Last year it also launched a family friendly activities programme and hosts various other events such as the popular annual West Lancashire Open Exhibition, which allows professional and amateur artists to submit their works for possible display. They also run a Saturday Art Club for children; holiday workshops; a members group; and is also a registered centre for the Arts Council England’s Arts Awards Accreditation Scheme for young people between the ages of 11 to 25 years.

Cllr Andrew Fowler, Portfolio Holder for Community Services and Health, said: "I’m not surprised that Chapel Gallery has been short-listed for such a prestigious award because it’s an excellent facility that has improved access to contemporary art within the district over the years and provides a quality service to the whole community. The artistic programme content is second to none and the fact that it really does offer something for everyone and supports artists’ professional development through exhibitions should be applauded. We’re keeping our fingers crossed that the judges recognise this on D-Day!"

The winner will be announced on 10 June. You can visit the gallery off St Helens Road, which is free, anytime from 10am to 4.30pm, Tuesday to Saturday. The café and shop is open from 10am to 4pm.
