Your Council is saving you money on fun
activities
Times are hard in today’s economic downturn but there are many
free or low cost activities provided by your council to help you
enjoy the wonders of West Lancs!
You can visit the art gallery, enjoy the great outdoors at the
many pretty countryside sites, visit a nearby park or playground,
play sport or try your local leisure centre for a swim or gym
session.
West Lancashire Borough Council even has its own community
centres that host various events and entertainments.
Or why not find out more about the history of your area and
visit an old building?
As well as saving money, you can reap other benefits too such as
feeling happier and healthier!
Cllr Andrew Fowler, Portfolio Holder for Community Services,
said: "So many people have been affected by the recession and are
struggling to make ends meet but there are things that you can do
that don’t cost any money. West Lancashire is renowned for its
breathtaking countryside, for example, and it’s free to enjoy. We
also host lots of free events and activities to ensure that you can
still have fun and enjoy your recreational time without breaking
the bank. Visit our website www.westlancs.gov.uk/leisure to find out just
how we can help you save money."
For a fun-packed family day out, a trip to Chapel Gallery, off
St Helens Road, Ormskirk, could be just the ticket. It’s free
entrance and there’s always an exciting exhibition to view. Every
Saturday there is a room dedicated to creative pastimes for both
parents and youngsters to enjoy. Whilst there, visitors can meet
the gallery’s friendly team or join in the specially organised
activities to accompany the current exhibition on show. There are
monthly workshops too that are either free or a nominal charge.
Why not head to the hills and explore West Lancashire’s
beautiful countryside for free. There are plenty of activities for
people of all ages, including guided walks and children’s
activities that you can join as well as a Junior Rangers Club.
There are also a wide range of parks and playgrounds across the
borough that caters for children, teenagers and families. Many
include traditional play areas with swings, slides and roundabouts,
multi-use ball games areas and some have skateboarding facilities.
There are also a number of sports pitches for football, cricket and
bowling.
The Council also has a number of community centres across
Skelmersdale, which all host various activities and groups to join,
youth clubs and have free computer facilities.
Whether it's swimming or football, badminton or weightlifting,
there's an activity to suit you at one of West Lancashire Community
Leisure Trust’s five sports centres, swimming pools or fitness
suites. It is a small charge to use the facilities and the benefits
will help you to stay fit and healthy.
