Annual Monitoring Report

12 January 2009, 09/06

Planning policies are working well to protect and guide the development of land in West Lancs, according to a new report.

The Council’s fourth Annual Monitoring Report (AMR), which is available to read online now, shows that the Council’s policies are successfully guiding development in the district and that work on the Local Development Framework (LDF) is generally going ahead according to timetable.

Cllr Martin Forshaw, Portfolio Holder for Planning, said, "The AMR shows that the District Council is working hard to produce the LDF and that planning policies are working as they should. This helps to demonstrate how well the Council is performing."

The AMR includes a wide range of information about the district.  In total, almost 50 indicators are used to provide information on a wide range of social, economic, sustainable and environmental issues. The results are then used to measure the success of planning policies.

The AMR shows that:

  • Housing development is being directed to the main urban areas and is being built on previously developed land rather than greenfield sites.  A five-year supply of housing land is available in the district to serve future growth and meet Government requirements.
  • New employment land is being developed each year, supporting economic growth in the district. Development predominately occurs in the allocated areas and demonstrates policies restricting development outside of these areas are working.  There is still land available in the district for business development.
  • Heritage and environmental assets in the district continue to be protected by plan policies

To help improve the value of future AMRs, the Council welcomes comments on the 2008 AMR. Comments can be submitted through the website or emailed to ldf@westlancsdc.gov.uk. Deadline for the receipt of comments is 28 February 2009.
