Have a happy recycling new
year
West Lancs District Council is thanking
residents for their recycling efforts while reassuring them that
all the materials they put out for recycling are being put to good
use.
Councillor Paul Greenall, Portfolio Holder for
Recycling, explained: “I’d like to reassure residents that all the
materials we collect are put to good use and are actually recycled.
They are not being stockpiled or sent to landfill. This is because
the materials we collect are not mixed together. For example, we
collect paper separately from card, and we separate glass, cans and
plastic as we put them into the collection vehicles. This is
exactly what the industry wants.”
The West Lancs recycling collections operate
in a way which means the material collected is of high quality and
the recycling industry does not need to spend money separating it.
So there is a strong market for what West Lancs has to offer.
Cllr Greenall added: “I’d like to thank West
Lancs residents for their success in making sure that they present
the materials correctly for recycling, with the materials separate
and things like cans and bottles rinsed out, reducing any
contamination issues.
“Almost half of all West Lancs domestic waste
is now being recycled and this is increasing month by month so we
are well on the way to exceeding 50% before the target date of
2010. This success is due to the efforts of local residents and I
pay tribute to them. Let’s keep it up and make 2009 our best ever
recycling year.”
More information about refuse and recycling
and how to present your materials for collections is
available when you visit our refuse and
recycling page. You can also report problems, request
assistance or ask for replacement bags, bins and boxes through the
website.
Residents are reminded that they should put
all materials, bins, bags or boxes out on collection day by 7am so
they are ready for collection. Collection times may vary due to
weather conditions and other operational factors.
Please wash all cans, tins, bottles and jars
before putting them out. Leave any extra recycling materials in
open carrier bags ideally putting the same items together e.g. all
plastic in one bag, all cans in another bag. Alternatively, you can
use another plastic container for your extra recycling materials.
This must be no bigger than the blue box you are already provided
with and a similar shape.
