Young people enjoy better playtime at new youthYoung people jumping in the air clubs!

New youth clubs have been launched in areas that don’t have as many facilities or activities for older children to enjoy.

After-school sessions for older age groups have been started in Scarisbrick, West Skelmersdale and Birch Green so that they can meet and socialise in a fun environment.

During the club times, young people can enjoy everything from film nights, arts and crafts, indoor sports, computers, trying out the Wii games console, snooker, pool, chess and other activities. In the warmer weather lots of activities will also take place outdoors.

This latest initiative is part of the Council’s ‘Play Project’, which was launched last autumn to encourage new play opportunities for children who live in rural communities and those in older age groups between 11 and 17 years.

The project is thanks to Big Lottery funding to improve access to play in West Lancashire for those target groups who don’t have as many facilities on their doorstep to give them a chance to access new leisure pastimes away from the classroom.

The new youth clubs run during school term times and are as follows:

  • Mondays, Birch Green Community Centre, Hartlands, Skelmersdale, 5pm to 7pm.
  • Tuesdays, West Skelmersdale Greenhill Community Centre, Beech Close, 5pm to 7pm.
  • Scarisbrick Village Hall, Southport Road, Wednesdays between 4.30pm and 6.30pm and Thursdays between 5pm and 7pm.

Cllr Geoff Hammond, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: "Since we set up these new youth clubs they have become really popular because it’s a chance for children to just come along and enjoy themselves in a fun, informal environment to meet with friends and take part in activities and games. So try and come along to these free clubs."

During the February half-term holidays, a number of indoor and outdoor activities have also been planned as part of the Play Project. Sessions take place between 10am and 3pm.

The 20 February has been left open, as it is likely that a trip out will be organised for the children.

  • 16 February, St John’s Primary, Flamstead, Birch Green.
  • 17 February, West Skelmersdale Greenhill Community Centre, Beech Close.
  • 18 February, Hesketh Bank Village Hall, Station Road.
  • 19 February, Scarisbrick Village Hall, Southport Road.

Places are limited for the half-term activities so children must register for a space as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. For more information contact the team on 01695 555570.
