Shopping gets creative as artwork is unveiled at
Concourse
More than 50 young people who took part in a public art project
will join in the celebrations for the official unveiling of this
eye-catching work on 20 March.
West Lancashire District Council’s Arts Development Team and the
Concourse Shopping Centre, Skelmersdale, joined forces to organise
open workshops for youngsters to drop in and design a large mural
during the February half term holidays.
The ‘Tree of Life’ was chosen as the theme for the mural because
of its role as a universal symbol across many cultures and because
it’s often used to represent positive things, including wisdom,
protection, strength and beauty.
During the initiative, children spent their days with
professional artist Shelly Atton to create the massive public piece
of art, which is to be unveiled on Friday 20 March.
This event will also be a celebration to thank the children for
all their hard work in bringing the project to fruition.
Cllr Andrew Fowler, Portfolio Holder for Community Services and
Health, said: "The idea behind this exciting initiative was to
create a fun learning activity for children, which would result in
a mural for the Concourse. The workshops were a huge success and
youngsters really enjoyed themselves and were able to express
themselves creatively. I can’t wait to see the results of their
hard work!"
The mural will be installed on a blank hoarding next to Iceland,
in the Concourse and will include the names of all the children who
took part.
