Young people from Skelmersdale
communities set to score
One lucky group of Skelmersdale youngsters
will be working off those calories this Easter if they are chosen
for a soccer bonanza tournament!
West Lancashire District Council’s Sports
Development Team will be picking a number of young people to take
part in a Futsal competition, which is a type of football played
indoors using different techniques. Youngsters who are chosen will
be coached to play this type of game properly.
However, only those children who go along to
the Easter kick-about sessions in Skelmersdale will be in with a
chance of scoring a place to take part in the games in Manchester
on 17 April. So children need to get their boots on if they want to
play against other teams from across the North West.
The kick-about sessions are being organised
through Sports Development’s Street Sport Project, which has been
implemented in areas of Skelmersdale, including Digmoor, Moorside
and Tanhouse. The idea behind it is to use sport to reduce
anti-social behaviour and create positive opportunities for young
people.
Cllr Andrew Fowler, Portfolio Holder for
Community Services, said: “This initiative is really helping to
break down the barriers to sport and physical activity and create
so many positive opportunities and experiences for young people.
I’d encourage youngsters to come along to our kick-about sessions
to be in with a chance of competing in Manchester because it’s a
fun way to play against different teams, visit another area and
play on a 3G pitch at the Soccerdome!”
In fact, eight youngsters have already sampled
a Futsal tournament during the February half-term holidays.
Although they didn’t win they were given a special mention for fair
play and good behaviour!
So make sure you don’t lose out and join one
of the kick-about sessions in Skelmersdale during the holidays.
They are free and are run by fully qualified sports coaches for
children aged 8 to 13. They include activities such as football,
dodgeball, basketball, qwik cricket, rounders and much more! They
will take place in the April half-term holidays, from 11am to 1pm
then 2pm to 4pm and are as follows:
- Monday 6, Tanhouse kick-about, behind the community
centre at Ennerdale
- Tuesday 7, Digmoor kick-about, behind the community
centre at Birleywood
- Wednesday 8, Little Digmoor kick-about (next to Almond
Tree pub)
- Tuesday 14, Tanhouse

- Wednesday 15, Digmoor kick-about
- Thursday 16, Little Digmoor

- Friday 17, Beechtrees skate park (from 11am to
