Cleanbake to tell Mayor their recipe for
success
A company that is helping young people into employment, and
leading the way on producing environmentally friendly products, is
to be visited by West Lancashire’s Mayor and Council VIPs.
Cleanbake Ltd has a purpose-built plant on Stanley Industrial
Estate, Skelmersdale (the largest in Europe), where they carry out
the cleaning, refurbishing and recoating of baking pans, trays and
racks, as well as supplying standard and bespoke equipment to the
baking industry
Since opening in 1991 the business has grown significantly. They
now refurbish over a million items per year and their customers
include major retail chains such as Asda and Morrisons and
industrial bakeries such as Warburtons and Greggs.
They employ 71 staff, all local to West Lancashire, and they
particularly focus on getting young people, including those from
less advantaged backgrounds, into the workplace.
As part of their rise to success, last year the company received
a grant from West Lancashire Borough Council (through the West
Lancashire Local Strategic Partnership’s Investing in Business
Regeneration Programme) to help them purchase state-of-the-art
machinery to ensure they remained the UK market leader in the
bakery product sector. This also ensured that Cleanbake could
continue operating from its Skelmersdale site rather than move
outside the UK. The company has also received ongoing business
support from the Council’s Enterprising West Lancashire Team.
Cllr Adrian Owens, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and
Estates, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting such a
ground-breaking business which is not only helping local people
into employment but is clearly doing so well in the bakery sector
despite the current economic climate. Obviously their ability to
keep operating from Skelmersdale is a real boost to our local
economy, and I’m sure their innovative ideas and enthusiasm will
stand them in good stead to remain a market leader.”
With climate change a hot topic, Cleanbake are constantly
improving their products to make them more environmentally
friendly. They are currently re-launching their Grease Free Bakery
system which could potentially save supermarket bakeries 1 tonne of
carbon emissions per year as well as saving them money. This is
because it removes the need to use grease or non-stick paper in the
baking process. Thus it improves the working environment for bakers
by improving cleanliness, reducing accident risks and increasing
the equipment servicing period. They are also developing a range of
coatings using water-based solutions instead of solvents - again
helping the environment.
Wanting to practice what they preach, Cleanbake are also currently
applying for funding to help towards improving their own efficiency
and reducing the environmental impact of their own work they do at
the plant in Skelmersdale.
To find out more about their exciting developments, the Mayor
Cllr Geoff M. Roberts and senior VIPs from the Council will be
given a tour of the site on 20th October.
