Let’s talk rubbish at schools!
Pupils are learning the importance of the three R’s - reduce,
re-use and recycle - to encourage them to look after West
Lancashire’s environment.
The Borough Council’s Street Scene Education Officer has been
taking their popular ‘Let’s Talk Rubbish’ roadshows to various
schools across West Lancashire to promote clean, green and tidy
messages.
The next school to be visited will be Burscough Lordsgate
Township Primary on 23rd October, where the officer will give talks
in the morning and then have displays in the afternoon to coincide
with the school’s environmental fair.
During the interactive session, children will be taught how they
can reduce waste, donate and buy from charity shops to re-use goods
and recycle their rubbish such as paper, cans, glass, plastic
bottles, cardboard, textiles and other items.
The event will also cover topics such as how litter, graffiti,
chewing gum and dog excrement can spoil landscapes and even affect
wildlife or attract vermin! The children will also receive a fun
work pack, which includes educational quizzes, worksheets and a
recycled pencil!
This is just one of a number of schools that officers will be
visiting over the next few months to deliver their messages.
Councillor Paul Greenall, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety,
said: “These talks are a great way to make young people aware of
the need to keep the borough clean, green and litter-free. They
have been designed to be fun and friendly whilst getting across the
right messages to ensure the environment is looked after for future
generations. We want children to learn from an early age to
have pride in their area and we know that these talks work because
the children are always really enthusiastic and even tell us that
they are educating their parents about such important issues."
In fact, over the last two years more than 2,500 youngsters have
benefited from these educational talks and have been learning how
to look after the environment.
Letters are a sent out to schools twice a year to encourage them
to sign up for the environmental presentations.
