Community centres bringing communities together

Community centres play an important role in bringing local communities together, so why not check out what’s happening near you?

West Lancashire Borough Council has four Community Resource Centres in Skelmersdale - Birch Green, Digmoor, Tanhouse and the Greenhill (West Skelmersdale) - that play host to regular activities, events and educational facilities.

For example here’s a taster of a few main events coming up:

  • For the super slueths amongst you there’s a Murder Mystery to be solved in Birch Green Community Centre on Friday 11 September. Called 'The Curse of Willoughby Diamond', it will be performed by the Roundabout Theatre Company, supper included in ticket price of £4.
  • Don’t miss the ‘Re-Recycling Day’ (similar to a swap shop) at Digmoor Community Centre on 12 September. The event also includes the return of the popular ice rink, stalls and refreshments

  • Get in the mix at an under 18’s DJ night on Friday 4 September at Tanhouse Community Centre, presented by R.D.P.O Enterprise, supported by Lancashire County Council’s Young People’s Service. Tickets are priced £1

These are just some of the many fun events on offer throughout the centres and compliment the variety of activities to suit a wide age range, such as keep fit, dance classes, martial arts, youth activities, pensioners clubs and family and toddler groups to name a few. Check out the Council’s website www.westlancs.gov.uk/communitycentres.

Cllr Andrew Fowler, Portfolio Holder for Community Services, said: "Our Community Resource Centres play an important role in bringing local communities together. They offer a focal point for neighbourhood activities and a base for local groups. So why not check out what's happening at your local centre? When visiting our centres, you may even have suggestions of your own and the Volunteer Management Committees on hand are always keen to welcome new activity ideas. Make sure you drop in to find out more."

Each centre comprises of a main hall, which is ideal for functions and can be divided into two separate areas, small meeting rooms and kitchen facilities. They all have disabled access and good car parking facilities. Digmoor also has its own youth room available to hire too.
