Iceland to create jobs as they take over former
Woolworths site
A recruitment drive is to start later this year for the new
Iceland store that is opening in Ormskirk in February 2010.
West Lancashire Borough Council is delighted to confirm that
Iceland is moving to the former Woolworth’s premises in Aughton
Street, which will boost the local economy and create more
jobs.
The British food retailer, which specialises in frozen goods and
has over 600 stores in Great Britain and Northern Ireland, will be
a great asset to the town centre shopping experience.
It’s also great news for employment opportunities in the borough
because Iceland will be starting their recruitment process in
December. Local people can register their interest for jobs by
visiting Iceland jobs (external
link), where they will receive a list of vacancies when they
are announced. This brand new store will need managers, assistants,
cashiers and other workers to run the retail unit as well as
graduate opportunities.
Councillor Adrian Owens, Portfolio Holder for Regeneration and
Estates, said: "I know residents have been waiting with baited
breath to find out who will be moving into the former Woolworth’s
store because it is a prime location in our town centre. We’re
pleased that it’s Iceland because it is a well-established company
and has a good reputation as an employer. In light of the economic
downturn and rising unemployment figures it is even better news
because it means that there will be lots of new vacancies for local
people to apply for. This news is a positive sign for the future
and hopefully other retailers will follow suit and open up in the
town centre."
It is hoped that the former Ponden Mill store will be opening
its doors again soon as discussions with potential occupiers are
ongoing.
