Waste & Recycling: How you can help

How you can help
When you go shopping:

  • Only buy what you really need
  • Choose the least-packaged goods
  • Re-use your carrier or shopping bags
  • Buy concentrated goods to minimise packaging
  • Avoid disposable products and buy things that last.
  • Buy things that can be recycled at the end of their lives.
  • Buy products made from recycled materials - this helps to support current recycling schemes by ensuring an end-market for the collected materials.
  • When equipment breaks down, see if it can be repaired before thinking about discarding it.
  • Hire, share or borrow equipment that is not used very often, such as garden tools or decorating equipment
  • Compost as much of your kitchen and garden waste as you can, either in your own garden or by taking it to a household waste recycling centre.
  • Use local recycling facilities to recycle as much as possible of your waste.
  • Join Action at Home (see separate Green Page).
  • Take your name off junk mailing lists by contacting the Mailing Preference Service.
