Littering

Littering
Nobody likes to see litter dropped. It costs more than £1 million a year to clear it up - and most of it is dropped by local people. We can all help by asking children, family and friends not to drop litter.

What we're doing to tackle litter in West Lancashire
West Lancashire has a Street Scene Enforcement Team who look out for littering and fly tipping across the district. The officers provide a daily uniformed patrol across the district, including the nine litter free zones.

Our Street Scene Officers can issue £75 fixed penalty notices for offences like dropping cigarettes and chewing gum or dropping litter in the street or from cars. They can also issue £100 fixed penalty notices for putting bin bags out too early or in the wrong place. The money generated from the fixed penalty notices is ploughed back into litter prevention initiatives in the district - like the giveaway of cigarette pouches.

Litter free zones
There are 9 litter free zones across the district in Burscough and Ormskirk town centres, Ashurst, Birch Green, Digmoor, Old Skelmersdale, Tanhouse, and the Scott Estate in Skelmersdale.

The zones are patrolled by Street Scene officers and Police community support officers. They have proved very successful, leading to a reduction in the amount of litter on the streets.

Anyone disposing of litter on any road or public open space in a Litter Free Zone who does not pick up the litter is issued with a £75 fixed penalty notice. Each zone has large signs at the boundaries to ensure the public are aware of the penalties should they choose to drop their empty cigarette packet or food wrappers in the street.

Clean up campaigns and educational talks
Street Scene officers visit schools and community groups to give talks as part of our commitment to teaching local people about the importance of handling litter responsibly. If you are interesting in arranging a talk, please contact the Street Scene Enforcement Team on 01695 577177.

We can also help voluntary groups, schools and parish councils with small-scale, local environmental campaigns. Contact the Recycling & Waste Management Officer on 01695 577177 for further details.
