West Lancashire is the perfect place for
families to spend time exploring, playing and relaxing.
Tick off the attractions on a picturesque town trail, enjoy an
evening at the theatre, watch cows being milked down at the farm
and step back in time to the golden age of steam.
Out and about
Families heading out and about in West
Lancashire will never be short of something to see and do. The
Ormskirk Town Trail provides inspiration for a one and half
hour wander through the picturesque town ticking of attractions
including the clock tower and the old coaching house along the
way.

As an alternative you could ride behind a
historic steam locomotive at the West Lancashire Light Railway
(external link). The Railway is open every Sunday and Bank
Holiday between Easter and the end of October and special Santa
trains run on three days in December. Outdoor types will be in
their element at Leisure Lakes (external
link) Mere Brow near Tarleton. The wide-open spaces
surrounding the caravan and camping park provide a venue for
windsurfing, mountain biking, canoeing, jet skiing and golf.
There's over 90 acres of marine and picnic park with pleasant
walks.
Finding a place in the District for some
quality family time is easy, with beautiful country parkland,
family activities organised by the District Council’s Ranger
Service, golf courses, parks and playgrounds, there are plenty of
chances to get some fresh air.
Lovers of contemporary arts and crafts
should visit Ormskirk’s Chapel Gallery, which has a large
exhibition space, and is host to a lively exhibition programme of
high quality artwork.

Theatre enthusiasts are well catered for at
the Rose Theatre (external link), part
of the Edge Hill University campus.

Farm Fun
Kids of all ages are welcome at Farmer Ted’s Farm Park (external
link), Ormskirk. The park boasts tractor and trailer rides, as
well a large animal barn which is the venue for milking
demonstrations and houses pigs, llamas, ponies and goats. There is
also an outdoor adventure playground and an indoor adventure area
and sand pit. Or why not visit Windmill Animal Farm
(external link) near Burscough, which is set within the grounds
of a former working windmill. The farm offers visitors the chance
to experience the every day running of an actual working farm while
still having the chance to watch, feed, and play with the
animals.
