Background to Burscough town centre

Burscough PillarBackground to Burscough town centre

Burscough is a small rural town set within the agricultural land of the West Lancashire plain.

The town boasts good transport links with two train stations and the Leeds-Liverpool Canal running through the town. The internationally important Wildfowl and Wetland Trust’s, Martin Mere reserve, is also located nearby.

The small town centre comprises linear development on either side of the busy A59 Liverpool-Preston road and for a number of years the building stock and public areas looked tired and in need of repair, which discourage people from shopping in or visiting the town.

The centre also lacked a sense of character or appeal, as there was no public square or meeting place, and pedestrians felt dominated by heavy traffic from the A59.
