West Lancashire has
approximately 13km of coastline that lies within the River Ribble
Estuary.
The Borough Council is the relevant operating
authority for:
- Coastal protection - measures against
coastal erosion
- Sea defences - measures against flooding
from the sea
There are no flood or coastal
defences owned or managed by the Council. The Coastal Managers are
the Environment Agency and private land owners.
Coastlines are constantly
changing due to the natural weathering that occurs from waves,
strong tides and winds. Alongside these factors, social, economic
and environmental pressures are increasing in the coastal areas
around Britain.
To help plan the future
management of the coastline and coastal defences, a Shoreline
Management Plan (SMP) was put in place in the late
1990s.
In order to determine how
the region’s shoreline should be managed over the next 100 years
the North West and North Wales Coastal Group held a public
consultation exercise, which ended in early 2010. A final
(second generation) Shoreline Management Plan (SMP2) has now been
produced by the group.
