FAQs: grey bag collections

Frequently asked questions: Grey bag collections

About the colour coded grey bin bags...
Q: How many bin bags should I get?
A: Each resident gets three bin bags per week posted through your letterbox. They are grey with yellow crosses.

Q: How big are the bin bags?
A: The colour coded grey bags have a capacity of about 45 litres.

Q: What if three bin bags isn't enough?
A: This shouldn't be a problem if you use the recycling facilities available. By recycling as much as possible, you'll reduce the amount of residual waste you generate. You might be surprised how much of your waste can actually be recycled. Separating waste means there is less for your bin bags - normally only half as much.

Q: I have a large family - can I have more bags?
A: If you have a large family and think you need additional bin space, first of all please check to make sure you are recycling as much as you can. If you complete the Refuse/Recycling Assistance online form or call Customer Services on 01695 577177, we will visit your home, give advice and work out arrangements. We treat all requests individually. Please note: because of the number of enquiries we are receiving, it may take up to ten working days for us to deal with your enquiry.

Q: Can I save up my grey bin bags with yellow crosses e.g. if I only use two of my bin bags one week can I then put out four next week?
A: Yes. We'll deliver three grey bin bags per household, per week. Therefore all waste presented in our special grey bin bags with yellow crosses will be collected.

Q: Can I buy extra bin bags?
A: No. You may only use the special grey bin bags with yellow crosses that we supply. You cannot buy extra bags of this type and we won't collect waste in any other kind of bin bag.

Q: How will you know if people put out extra waste?
A: With this system, you receive grey bin bags with yellow crosses instead of clack bin bags. Only these grey bin bags with yellow crosses will be collected - black bin bags will not be taken.

Q: What happens if my bin bags get lost/stolen?
A: Bin bags are posted through letterboxes to avoid residents not receiving them.

About the grey bag collections...
Q: Where do I need to put my bin bags for collection?
A: We collect bin bags from each property. Please place your bin bags out at the edge of your property by 7.00am on the collection day. You don't need to pile up bin bags at your old collection point.

Q: What happens if I don't present my bin bags by 7.00am?
A:
The collections start from 7.00am, if your bin bags haven't been put out by the time the collectors arrive in your area, we will not come back for them and you will have to wait until your next collection.

Q: I have a bin cupboard at the front of my property - can I still put my bin bags in here for collection?
A: Yes. We will collect from bin cupboards but all bags must be placed in here.

Q: What happens if I leave out extra black bin bags?
A: We operate a 'three strikes policy'. We won't collect extra black bin bags and a warning sticker will be placed on them. If extra waste continues to be left we will write to you issuing a further warning explaining why your extra bags have not been collected and warning that if the problem continues you run the risk of being fined. If extra waste is left after this you will receive a final warning letter and may then face a fixed penalty notice for £100.

About the recycling collections...
Q: How do I present my cardboard for collection?
A: We suggest you fold down cardboard packaging as much as possible and bundle it together for collections. This could be done by putting all your cardboard out for collection inside another cardboard box, folding it as flat as possible and trapping it under your blue box on collection day or tying it together with a piece of string. Please don't use cellotape as this contaminates the cardboard and means it can't be recycled.

Q: What if my cardboard gets wet?
A: This isn't a problem. We'll collect all specified recyclable material put out for collection.

Q: How do I present my textiles for collection?
A: We've provided residents with a transparent bag for textile collections.

Q: What is classed as textiles?
A: We will collect clean clothing, bedding and sheets, and curtains. Please don't include old shoes or bags.
